SNACKS AND CRAFTS FOR CHARITY
"An estimated 1.2 million children and youth in Canada are affected by mental illness—yet, less than 20% will receive appropriate treatment."
Over the last several weeks, students in grade 6 have been learning about mental health, including ways to avoid stress and anxiety, and methods we can use to help us relax and stay calm. We all get a little bit stressed and anxious, especially when it comes to school, assignments and tests. Home life and social issues can sometimes add to our stress. On April 11, 2019, grade 6 students were all involved in a fundraising event to raise Mental Health awareness. The project was headed by Mme Furtado, who worked tirelessly to find 67 sponsors to donate all the delicious and healthy snacks that were sold during the fundraiser. A healthy body helps to maintain a healthy mind! All Grade 6 teachers and their classes worked their creativity, and made several craft items that were sold alongside the snacks. We had sleep masks, stress balls, inspirational bookmarks, artistic frames, and much more. All proceeds went to Ami-Quebec, a non-profit organization helping families deal with effects of mental illness. They offer support and free programs. The event, open to grades 4,5,6, was a success and raised over $1000 for the cause! Great work everyone!

CREATIVE KIDS
Written by: Sienna Jager & Hannah Kirolous Gayed
You may have noticed some colorful new changes at Gardenview since the start of the year. Students from rooms 20 & 18 have created an extraordinary piece of art which now decorates the halls on the third floor! Mme Noemie and her student art teacher, Mme Beatrice, launched the project. Students worked together to paint two murals, which aim to promote a positive mindset in the school. Though their student teacher designed the layout, the students were the inspiration for this project.
The murals started off with blank, white walls in the third floor hallway, and today, after a lot of hard work, and effort, the murals add sunshine to the area! They started off with messages meant to inspire Gardenview students. Then, a painting technique using black and white was applied, followed by colorful pallets of blues and oranges.

You can see that there are birds soaring throughout the mural. The birds represent each individual student and their uniqueness. It represents the idea of being free like a bird. Positive words, and the quote “believe in yourself”, serve as gentle reminders to students to always do their best.

The students really enjoyed this project, because it was a way to express themselves and to build their teamwork skills. The main point of this project was to build friendships, and to make them stronger, while beautifying the school at the same time. They make the hallway feel safe, lively, and vibrant. We thank them for that!
